At the time of global economic slowdown, companies with strong
fundamentals survive while the weak ones perish. Unlike other sectors of
the economy, the alcohol industry continues to grow despite a drop in
sales in some cases- making the industry recession proof. The strength
of the emerging markets has compensated to the loss in the developed
alcobev markets. India being one of the major alcobev markets has
registered growth in demand for beer, wine as well as the spirits
industry. As per a recent data, beer production in the last year ended
December ‘08 grew 11% over previous year, while Indian-Made Foreign
Liquor (IMFL) production increased by 13.28% and country liquor grew a
huge 34%.
The industry produced 4.4 lakh kilolitres (kls) of beer for the year
ended December 2008 compared to 3.98 lakh kls for the same period in
2007. IMFL production also grew from 2.95 lakhks in 2007 to 3.34 lakh
kls in 2008 while country liquor production zoomed past the 2 lakh-mark
(2.34 lakh kls) in 2008 from 1.75 lakh in 2007. Similar is the case with
premium spirits market which registered a conservative 18-20% growth in
the Nov-Dec month 2008.
INDSPIRIT 2009, the alcobev trade event offers an appropriate platform
to the industry to come together and celebrate this success. |
